Background of the Study
Study groups are commonly used as a collaborative learning strategy, particularly in challenging academic fields such as nursing. These groups allow students to engage in shared learning experiences, exchange knowledge, and support one another in mastering complex concepts (Adeleke et al., 2023). In nursing education, where the curriculum is intensive and includes both theoretical and practical components, study groups can help students reinforce their understanding, clarify doubts, and deepen their knowledge (Ajayi & Suleiman, 2024). Study groups also promote critical thinking, communication skills, and teamwork, all of which are essential qualities for nursing practice.
At Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe, nursing students have access to study groups as part of their academic support system. However, there is limited research on how effective these groups are in improving students' academic performance, especially considering the high demands of nursing education. This study aims to examine the role of study groups in enhancing nursing students' academic performance and identify the factors that contribute to their effectiveness.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of study groups in academic settings, there is insufficient evidence on the actual impact of these groups on nursing students' academic performance at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe. While some students report benefiting from study groups, others may struggle with ineffective group dynamics or lack of participation. This study seeks to explore how study groups influence nursing students' academic success and the factors that determine their effectiveness.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of study groups in improving academic performance among nursing students at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
2. To examine the benefits and challenges associated with study groups in nursing education.
3. To propose strategies for improving the effectiveness of study groups in enhancing nursing students' academic performance.
Research Questions
1. How do study groups influence nursing students' academic performance at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe?
2. What are the benefits and challenges of participating in study groups for nursing students?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of study groups in nursing education?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nursing students who participate in study groups perform better academically than those who do not.
2. Study groups significantly contribute to improved understanding of complex nursing concepts.
3. Effective study group facilitation enhances nursing students' academic performance.
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, and evaluate the role of study groups in their academic performance. Limitations include the variability in group dynamics and individual learning styles.
